Breeders' Cup to add to safety measures at Santa Anita

LOS ANGELES (AP) The Breeders' Cup will increase the number of veterinarians on site during its world championships this fall at Santa Anita, where 30 horses died during the racing meet that recently concluded.

That's according to Craig Fravel, president and chief executive of the Breeders' Cup, who said reaction to the board of directors' decision to keep the two-day event at the historic Southern California track has been "very supportive." (MORE)

Santa Anita owner says reforms led to major improvements

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) The owner of Santa Anita says "significant improvements" have occurred since it imposed reforms during its recent racing season, when 30 horses died at the Southern California track.

Track owner The Stronach Group released a statement Friday citing a 58% decrease in the number of fatalities during the winter-spring meet since new rules took effect in mid-March. It said there was about an 80% decrease in deaths during training. (MORE)
